On the way to the waterfalls, we pass several piles by the stream, most of which have already fallen into disrepair. They were used to produce charcoal and make the hike a special experience. One of the old kilns is still in operation and is cooling down.

The city stretches west-east on the Sarajevo plain in the midst of the Dinaric Mountains. The Miljacka River flows through the town; the Bosna rises west of the city in the municipality of Ilidža from a karst spring. The plain is surmounted by the mountains of Bjelašnica and Igman in the south-west and Jahorina and Trebević in the south-east.

The city center is 511 meters above sea level. The suburbs reach up to over 900 meters. The mountains around the city are mostly forested and up to 2,000 meters high.
