The place where the church of Santa Maria di Portonovo stands is enchanting, one of the most beautiful and evocative of the Marche Riviera. The building rises almost overlooking the sea and magically stands out thanks to the visual contrast between the white stone with which it was built, the turquoise color of the sea and the green of the Mediterranean scrub that surrounds it in a perfect balance between man and nature.

The church is one of the most interesting examples of Romanesque architecture in central Italy with five naves with an octagonal dome of Byzantine inspiration. Dating back to 1034, it was located next to a Benedictine monastery which around 1500, following a Turkish invasion, was destroyed and almost razed to the ground while the church miraculously remained standing representing for almost 700 years the only building in the whole Portonovo bay.
