The new government shows superiority in large buildings. Aleksandar Vitek and Ćiril Iveković are working on the design for Vijećnica (town hall), which is to be built right next to Čaršija. But on this side lives a stubborn man who refuses to sell his house and land. Eventually he agreed to sell the land, but not the house. He asked that his house be moved brick by brick across the river. Since then, this building has been called Inat kuća (Defiance House) and is now a restaurant serving traditional Bosnian cuisine.

The city stretches west-east on the Sarajevo plain in the midst of the Dinaric Mountains. The Miljacka River flows through the town; the Bosna rises west of the city in the municipality of Ilidža from a karst spring. The plain is surmounted by the mountains of Bjelašnica and Igman in the south-west and Jahorina and Trebević in the south-east.

The city center is 511 meters above sea level. The suburbs reach up to over 900 meters. The mountains around the city are mostly forested and up to 2,000 meters high.

The defiance house is located directly on the Seher Cehajina Bridge. The building got its name when the Austro-Hungarian administration was planning to build the town hall and wanted to demolish the house because it was on the building site. However, the owner persistently refused to move out, all persuasion failed. Only when the administration suggested tearing down the house stone by stone and rebuilding it on the opposite bank of Miljacjka, and also promised him a sack of gold coins, did the owner change his mind.
