The crater at the entrance is none. Hometown poet Hermann Lons already knew that. "Not Volcano, but Neptune was its creator," he noted. In the ring wall, which is built of tufa, lime-saturated water meets an impermeable clay layer.
For thousands of years, the water flowing from the Deister has reached the surface there. As soon as it comes into contact with air, it deposits the lime that has deposited on the edge of the pond in the form of a volcanic crater. This unique geological formation and adjacent spring well are natural landmarks for locals and holidaymakers alike. As early as the 19th century, the preserving effect of the oxygen-poor lime water brought guests to the idea of sinking flower arrangements in the spring well, which retained their fresh appearance for months. Generations of spa guests have thrown coins into the wells hoping for speedy recovery.

The crater is located west of Bad Nenndorf and in the immediate vicinity of the main road 65. It is open all year to visit, the entrance is free.

Around 1903 the tufa wall surrounding the small crater had been removed. In 1908 the area around the springs was landscaped like a garden. The small spring pot was built like a fountain and fenced in, and a path with benches was built on the edge of the tufa wall of the large spring pot.

The district of Schaumburg declared the crater area a natural monument in 1980. The area around the crater could be a protected biotope as a dry, warm bush location. In the surrounding park-like grove there is a small moor-like large sedge reed and black alder. The grove is considered a biotope of great importance.

From 1963 to 2015, the bird park at the crater was operated as a private animal park on an adjacent property. In 2020, the site, which had meanwhile become overgrown, was leased to a private individual.
