Hochroterd is a small settlement in the municipality of Breitenfurt near Vienna. Coming from Vienna, the ascent is one of the first hills if you want to penetrate deeper into the south-eastern Vienna Woods. The settlement is inconspicuous, the eastern access road from Breitenfurt is very popular with cyclists due to its proximity to the city, even if the hill itself is often bypassed via Großhöniggraben. Hochroterd is unspectacular, but is sometimes underestimated for its view.
Ostauffahrt von Breitenfurt Ost: The east access road to Hochroterd is one of the most important Viennese city exits for racing cyclists. If you want to get to the Vienna Woods from southern Vienna, you can either drive via Kaltenleutmachen and the Sulzerhöhe, Laab im Walde or even Breitenfurt and Hochroterd. Structurally, Breitenfurt is divided into three parts: Breitenfurt-Ostend, Breitenfurt-Ost and Breitenfurt-West. The ascent begins in Breitenfurt Ost at the junction of the B 13 and L 2102. From there, orientate yourself in the direction of Hochroterd and Breitenfurt West. From then on nothing can go wrong. Always follow the widest street. At the beginning it goes through Breitenfurt Ost hardly noticeably uphill. The actual and quite steep ascent begins in Breitenfurt West. After leaving the inn behind you, you can turn right to Kleinen Semmering or continue to Hochroterd. The last climb up to the town center is often bypassed in the direction of Großhöniggraben and Gruberau. But you shouldn't do that, because from the top the view back over Vienna is quite impressive for such a small hill.
Southwest driveway from Gruberau: The driveway from Gruberau is often used to drive around Hochroterd itself. The ascent to the Gasthof Zur Schönen Aussicht has its charms. We start in Gruberau and drive north along Heiligenkreuzer Straße. The actual ascent begins in Großhöniggraben in a long right-hand bend.
Once at the top, you would miss the beautiful view if you continued straight ahead in the direction of Breitenfurt. Instead, we turn right onto a fairly steep ramp towards the town centre.
Southeast ascent from Wöglerin: Coming from the Sulzerhöhe, Sulz im Wienerwald or Sittendorf, the climb starts at the crossroads in Wöglerin. We follow the L 128 north. The ascent is very unspectacular except for an impressively high BMX or dirt bike ramp on the right side of the road after a few hundred meters. In the district of Rechte Wöglerin there are a few beautiful but extremely flat hairpin bends. Otherwise you roll over there quite quickly.
