A beguine from the beguinage of Lier heard about a number of Marian apparitions in Marpingen, a municipality of the German state of Saarland. She ensured that in 1877 a wooden chapel was built in the forest in honor of Our Lady of Marpingen. Exactly 100 years later, the wood was replaced by stone.
