The Roman bridge of Ourense known as Ponte Vella or Puente Mayor, over the Miño river, was built in the 1st century AD. C. within a branch of Via XVIII or Via Nova.
According to tradition, it dates from the time of Trajan, however its construction characteristics bring it closer to the time of Augustus. Of that first bridge, only a few padded ashlars from the bases remain, as mute witnesses of the past.

Only a few stones remain from the first Roman bridge of the Augustus era. A branch of the Roman road XVIII of Antonino's itinerary ran through the town. It was rebuilt in the 13th century, giving it the current profile with the pointed arch, but it was not until the 17th century that Melchor de Velasco completed it in its present form. The tower that appears in the city coat of arms was destroyed in the 19th century. Near the bridge is the Capilla dos Remedios, a 16th-century chapel.
