The Royal Observatory and especially its location in Greenwich are known worldwide for the "invention" of the prime meridian - more precisely, the division of the globe into longitude and latitude, with the prime meridian (sometimes also called the "Greenwich Line") running here as the central reference point. This was an epochal masterpiece in the field of cartography and navigation, at the time especially important for seafaring. Even today's satellite technology with GPS basically still uses the coordinate principle developed here.

Top of a steep climb. Good paved paths all round. More gentle routes are available. Busy when open.

a great place to visit whether it's walk, hike or run. you can also visit the local cafe. there's accessible toilets and great and beautiful outdoors!
