    Hiking

With fantastic views and managed by Avon Wildlife Trust - The calcareous grassland of Hellenge Hill supports rare plants such as honewort and Somerset hair-grass which are only found on the hot southern scarp of the Mendip Hills. Look out also for green-winged orchid, common broomrape, yellow-wort, carline thistle and autumn lady's tresses. Gorse and hawthorn provide good habitat for birds and invertebrates. You may see adders basking on the slopes. Hellenge Hill is a Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI). This site is a haven for butterflies and wildlife

Embark on the Bleadon Hill & Hellenge Hill loop, a moderate hike spanning 6.0 miles (9.6 km) with an elevation gain of 630 feet (192 metres). You can expect to complete this route in approximately 2 hours and 41 minutes. The trail offers diverse terrain, from calcareous grasslands to woodland sections, and features moderate to steep inclines that provide a rewarding challenge.

When planning your visit, you will find parking available in a layby on Roman Road or near the Bleadon Hill Golf Course. Be aware that paths can become muddy, especially after rain, so appropriate footwear is essential for a comfortable hike. If you bring your dog, remember to keep it on a lead, particularly within sensitive areas like Hellenge Hill Nature Reserve, where grazing animals are often present.

This route combines two distinct hills, offering expansive views across the Somerset Levels and the Bristol Channel from Bleadon Hill. You might even spot distant landmarks like Brent Knoll on a clear day. The calcareous grasslands along the way are home to unique wildflowers, which are best observed between April and August, adding a vibrant touch to your journey.
