This monument, erected initially in 1901 by the Daughters of the American Revolution, commemorates the location of a signal beacon used by General Washington during the American Revolutionary War. His troops were based west of the Hudson River, so he created a warning system by erecting pyres on the hills along the river that his sentries could light when they spotted British troops approaching. These signal fires were called "beacons," and they played an essential role in the revolution's success. They were very much like the beacons in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, but for a slightly different purpose.

Lightning struck and destroyed the monument in 1934, so DAR replaced it without the metal flag pole on top. These days, the monument is located behind a radio station, and there are no trail markers directing you to the monument.

As you can see in the photos, the station is also worth a visit because of the station, at least for tech-savvy people. The number of transmitter systems on the masts is impressive and the location is ideal as a transmitter location. To all amateur radio operators: take your transceiver with you!
