Caerleon is a historic town on the River Usk, just north east of the city of Newport. It is most famous for its Roman past, as it was home to the legionary fortress of Isca Augusta. Remains discovered here include evidence of a bath house, a military amphitheatre and barracks. The remains of an earlier Iron Age hillfort have also been discovered here.
The town is the start point for the Usk Valley Walk, a 48-mile (77 km) long-distance trail that follows the river to Brecon. There are also a number of paths that explore nearby Chepstow Hill, which rises to 374 feet (114 m).
