Perched on the moors above Halifax, Southowram is a pleasant village that has associations with Emily Brontë. She taught at what was then an exclusive boarding school on Law Lane but stayed for only six months due to the effect the role was having on her lifestyle. A plaque commemorates her stay.

The Calderdale Way long-distance footpath runs through the village and there are plenty of excellent walks nearby. Shibden Park and its beautiful lake are to the north, while Elland Park Wood and Cromwell Bottom Local Nature Reserve are to the south. From the village are excellent views over Halifax, while a short walk to Halifax Beacon is recommended.
