Until 1844, Master Jan Hessels van Wolda held the position of teacher in the Colonies of Benevolence. In the 1960s, a dispute arose over who should be responsible for the costs of education. For this reason, in 1866 the schools were placed under the responsibility of the government. Rijksschool III was founded around 1875 as a replacement for the colony school from 1826. This school was known for its excellent facilities and teaching materials.
