At the time of the Cold War, a small American special unit was stationed on the Sundernberg in Borgholzhausen in the midst of a Dutch-led NATO unit with Nike anti-aircraft missiles (MIM-14 Nike Hercules), which had control over the nuclear warheads. In 1960 the first preparatory measures for the construction of the site began, the actual work four years later.
