The castle of the Lords of Oostkerke was located on this site. In 1089 the first mention was made of a Lord of Oostkerke, namely Dodinus van Oostkerke. From the 10th or 11th century there was already a building on this site, possibly a wooden donjon. In the 13th century there was a brick keep on a rectangular plan. In 1358, Den Hove van Oostkerke was first mentioned in writing. In the 14th century, a brick castle was built with an upper court, which contained the actual feudal residence, and a lower court. The upper court was walled and had three towers. The farmyard was flanked by two large towers and included a pigeon tower and an ice cellar.
