In the Middle Ages, the state border between the Diocese of Verden and the Duchy of Lüneburg ran from Stellichte to the royal court at Bleckwedel, Kettenburg and Ottingen. In 1576, Bishop Eberhard had the often disputed border marked. A round mound of earth was thrown up at every point at which the borderline made a bend. Large boundary stones made of Weser sandstone were placed on every third or fourth of the hills. They bear the lion coat of arms of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg on the Lüneburg side and the coat of arms of the diocese with the cross of nails on the Verden side. Only a few original stones are still present. For this reason, near Kettenburg and Ottingen, replicas of the old boundary stones that are true to the original have been placed in their original locations and provided with explanatory boards.
