Moated LaerOn the highway towards Arnsberg the moated castle Laer is located next to the Ruhr.It was first documented in 1268 - as a fief of the Meschede Abbey. In it is named by name Berolf von Lare. This was then treasurer of the rich collegiate. In 1602 the estate was acquired by Paderborn's Hofmeister Heinrich von Westphalen. He had a representative mansion built in 1608, for whose construction the older building fabric was used. In 1669, the portal and the dome of the portal tower were built. The chapel of St. John Baptist was built in the 17th century. 1764 the estate was expanded as a castle complex. The fore-castle and farm buildings were created. The Laer moated castle is privately owned - so the inside of the building can not be visited. A walk through the beautiful park of Schloss Laer is possible. Please respect the privacy of the castle owners during a visit. Many Thanks!Source: City of Meschede
