The Friedrichsburg was built from 1586 to 1593 by Count Palatine Friedrich. The master builder was Leonhardt Greineisen from Burglengenfeld, the work was carried out by the Weiden master mason Hanss Reicholt. This died in 1589, whereupon the Italian master mason Hans Meria continued the work. The builder Frederick is also named after the castle.

Schloss Friedrichsburg is one of the most remarkable palace buildings in the Upper Palatinate: a three-storey box building with a steep saddle roof, surrounded by five round towers with pointed helmets, the decorative gable, an ornamented raftered ceiling on the first floor, remains of Baroque frame stucco ceilings and a huge roof truss. Since 2011, the city of Vohenstrauß has owned this landmark.

The stately renaissance castle - built from 1586 to 1593 by Count Palatine Friedrich - is one of the most remarkable castles in the Upper Palatinate: a three-storey box structure with steep saddle roof, surrounded by five round towers with pointed helmets, the decorative gable, deep vaults, a cruciform vaulted ground floor, an ornamented raftered ceiling in the first floor, remains of baroque frame stucco ceilings and a huge roof truss.
