    The village of Rosenthal

Rosenthal is an interesting link in the history of the two districts of Pankow and Reinickendorf. Until Greater Berlin was formed in 1920, Rosenthal was an independent estate district and rural community. At that time, the larger part of the territory came to the newly founded Berlin-Reinickendorf district; the smaller one with the former estate was assigned to the Pankow district. After the Second World War, the district belonged entirely to the East Berlin district of Pankow.
Rosenthal was first mentioned in 1356 as “Rosendalle”, but was probably built in the 13th century. In addition to the church (built around 1230), the town hall, manor house and office building still stand on the historic village green. There are still old farmhouses and farmsteads all around.
Until 1547, Rosenthal belonged to the v. family. Krummensee, 1694, was bought by Elector Friedrich III. Village and estate. In the following years he had a pleasure palace with a park and a pheasantry built in the village. In 1882, Berlin acquired the village in order to create sewage fields here. As a result, Rosenthal only expanded slightly. However, the country house colonies Nordend and Wilhelmsruh emerged on the Rosenthaler Feldflur from the 1880s onwards. This led to an increase in the population to around 6,000 by 1920.
During the GDR era, mainly single and two-family houses were built outside the old village area. As a result, the district has retained its suburban character to this day.
