14.10.2018 - Imposing, the triumphal arch - from here I would start the Roman cultural hiking trail. 😊👍

The easier way to follow the Danube comfortably and with great driving is probably on the left side, but on the right bank of the Danube you can follow the traces of the Romans, who ran their limes along the Danube. Worth seeing here is also Petronell-Carnuntum, which also includes these remains of a triumphal arch, which was probably built as a warning sign and in memory of the successful fight against the insurgent pagan population at this slightly raised place, slightly away from other facilities.

The exact function of the impressive structure is unknown today. Here you can start a discovery tour through the Roman city of Carnuntum: around 50,000 residents lived here in the military legionary camp and the attached civilian city. To compare: Hainburg has almost 6,000 inhabitants today, Bruck an der Leitha 7,700! At that time there were five-story houses in Rome; after the fall of the Roman Empire, it took Europe over 1000 years to be able to rebuild such buildings.
I recommend a long (bicycle) hike through the remains (and reconstructions in the local park) to immerse yourself in this great time. Just behind the main road is one of the two amphitheaters, a little further in town is the park with a museum and some reconstructed houses, further along the Danube there are the palace ruins and in front of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg the second amphitheater. Have fun!
