The site where the current Vajont Victims cemetery stands was not born by chance. Already from the first hours of the tragedy it was necessary to find an adequate area that would allow a cataloging of the bodies found and this site was therefore identified, not far from the village of Fortogna - a hamlet of Longarone - on which one of the most sad of the history of Vajont.

The Bishop of Belluno Muccin, who had suffered so much from the tragedy and who had worked so hard to alleviate the pain of the survivors, is today buried here, by his will, next to the Archpriest of Longarone, Msgr. Bortolo Larese, to the cooperator Don Lorenzo Larese and together with the dead who also thanks to the prelate obtained a "dignified and Christian" burial.

The Fortogna cemetery was and is an important meeting place for the various periodic events that commemorate the tragedy and, in a short time, it will be an integral part of a restructuring project promoted by the Longarone Administration.

The monumental cemetery of the Vajont victims is located in Fortogna (Longarone). At the entrance to the cemetery there is a portal where you can see some historical artifacts and a photographic itinerary relating to the construction of the cemetery itself and some works inspired by the tragedy. wave, we realize the need to identify an area where to bury the numerous victims. The Victims cemetery is therefore located 4 km south of Longarone, in Fortogna, a fraction of the municipality not affected by the wave, on a consecrated cornfield, where pits are promptly dug into which the coffins are lowered as they corpses would arrive on the spot.

The original cemetery had 1464 crosses, of which only 700 had names: in fact, most of the victims have not even been recognized. The current monumental cemetery, inaugurated after the renovation on 19 June 2004, appears instead as an immense garden, an infinite green lawn, on which 1910 white marble stones rest, one for each victim of the tragedy, regardless of the discovery, the recognition or from the place of burial: they are all Victims of the same tragedy and must all be remembered in the same way.
