The church was one of the numerous religious buildings scattered in the countrysides of Bitonto and Bari, and is in the Apulian Romanesque style. Some scholars have hypothesized that it is the church of "Santa Maria de' Staginisio", mentioned in a document dated August 1190.

The building is officially mentioned for the first time in 1488 in the red book of the University of Bitonto [
, together with the rock church of Sant'Angelo in Camerata, located a short distance away (of the latter, only the cave remains today).
The elevation was completely rebuilt in 1585; further additions were made in 1805 by commission of Michelangelo Maffei, a rich Bitontino, administrator of the city and knight of the Order of Malta, as mentioned on a plaque.
