The Waterwolf is one of the largest pumping stations in the Netherlands. Construction of the pumping station started in 1918. It was the first electrically powered pumping station in the Netherlands and when it was opened, it was together with the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal in Tacozijl near Lemmer, the largest pumping station in Europe. The Waterwolf was built and managed by the Electra water board. That is why the pumping station and the place where the building is located are often referred to by this name.
