This is not the Church of Our Lady in Bos (which also appears several times in the photos - recognizable by the tower and the cemetery) but the Chapel of Our Lady in the hamlet of Ossenweg, near Het Vinne and on the border between Limburg and Flemish Brabant. You can read more about the church of Bos at komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/4964196

The chapel in/of Ossenweg that you find here has existed for a long time: this place of pilgrimage in honor of Mary in Ossenweg has even existed longer than the widely known place of pilgrimage Scherpenheuvel. The chapel dates from 1538 and was gradually expanded. The basilica of Scherpenheuvel was not consecrated until 1627.

You can visit the chapel every day. The interior is L-shaped with the altar at the intersection of the two rooms. Masses are still celebrated here and pilgrims also find their way, with an annual rosary procession among other things. People still come to light candles. I have never been inside without someone passing by for a prayer or a candle.

The interior is also special, as are the buildings next to it. Among the sights: the apostle bench at the back of the chapel with a painted representation of Christ as Salvator from 1613, several seventeenth-century statues and a statue of Mary with her dead son in her lap from the sixteenth century.

The portico altar in the choir is dedicated to Our Lady. In the portico hangs a painting of the Adoration of the Shepherds (Flemish School, ca. 1765, canvas). On the pedestal of the statue of Our Lady of the Ossenweg, an ox and the plough refer to the origin of the chapel.

Legend has it that the chapel was created around a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary from the Castelberg Chapel, which was found in a nearby field in the 16th century. The statue was hung on an oak tree and was worshiped there.

Originally the chapel consisted only of a choir; before 1610 the ship was added. The chapel is crowned by a bell tower. The west facade is late Gothic; the side walls were rebuilt in the 18th century and on the south side is an extension in neo-Gothic style.

The year '1751' has been incorporated in the ceiling with stucco. The stained glass windows date from around 1950. The furniture includes a rood screen (1613) with four painted wooden panels, a baroque altar (1765) and baroque confessional chairs (18th century), a communion rail (18th century) and an 18th century painting in the beech.

The Church of Our Lady of the hamlet of Bos is the most beautiful church for hours in the area. The Gothic church dates largely from the 16th century and seems to have been transferred from the time when there were no cars or bicycles and the faithful went to church on foot. The single-aisled church is built in a combination of stone and stone and was formerly a monastery chapel.
