The village of Xhignesse dates back to the end of the Merovingian period when the mayors of the palace gradually took power and established their own dynasty, that of the Pepins. They would pave the way for their great successor, Emperor Charlemagne, and for the Carolingian civilization that would permeate all of Western Europe at the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries.
