Tips

A visit to the Lützelhardt castle ruins is an absolute must for visitors to this holiday region. Beautiful, well-preserved facility with a nice hiking pavilion as a rest area.

Originally the construction of the securing of the pass road into the Kinzigtal should have served. The southern Ortenau came from the 11th century increasingly in the sphere of influence of the Zähringer. In the early 12th century, the construction of the castle is likely to decline. She was probably managed by a Zähringer Ministerialen sex. However, there are only a few written records. In the course of disputes between the Staufen and the bishops of Strasbourg, the castle was probably destroyed in 1235 by the neighboring Geroldseckern, who belonged to the episcopal party. Then they took over the securing of the pass road on the newly built castle Hohengeroldseck.

Quaint ruin, which one reaches after a brisk hour march from 200 to 450 m. If you are looking for peace, you will find it here!

The pavilion is an idyllic resting place and also offered us protection from rain. A welcome break opportunity on the quality route Hohengeroldseck stage north.

Castle ruin Lützelhardt was excavated in the years 1926-1929. The ruin suggests three construction periods and shows transitional forms from Romanesque to early Gothic.

Here you can find the remains of the main castle Lützelhard. Nice place for a little break. The pavilion right next to it also invites you to take a break and at the same time offers protection from rain.

The knowledge gained during the excavations in 1926-1929 about the completely removed outer and middle castle lead to the floor plans exhibited on site. Of these parts, only the worked rock can be seen. In the former middle castle there is a rain-protected rest area.
There are still a few walls from the main castle, which have also been supplemented and secured. I have no idea why a millstone was walled in with it.
In any case, the ruin is nice and quiet and is worth a visit.

The legend of the Grüselhorn has grown up around Lützelhardt Castle, according to which a gentleman from Geroldseck was abducted to Lützelhardt, discovered his whereabouts through a familiar horn call and was then able to free himself. After that, Lützelhardt was said to have been destroyed (around 1235).
