Where the River Great Ouse meets the Wash and flows out into the North Sea is the historic town of King's Lynn. In medieval times, it was England's most important port and it retains a proud sense of this heritage today.

The town is a good base for exploring the Norfolk Coast AONB, with its beautiful beaches and wonderful wildlife. The town is also the end point of two long-distance trails: the Fen Rivers Way, a 50-mile (80 km) walk from Cambridge; and the Ouse Valley Way, a 150-mile (240 km) trek that follows the River Great Ouse from its source near Syresham, Northamptonshire.
