The St. Stephan airfield was once built as a strategic redoubt airfield during World War II. It was originally planned as a grass runway with a hangar, and was then regularly expanded. The airfield served as a base for jet aircraft such as the Vampire and Venom. The Hawker Hunter also used the runway as its base.

Today it is used for civil aviation. When there is no flight activity, cycling is permitted on the edge taxiways (not on the main runway).
