The small Rhine island at the bottom of Lake Constance has an important past. The earliest traces lead back to the time of the pile dwellers. The first abbot of the monastery of St. Gallen, Otmar, died on November 16, 759 on the island of Werd, after being deposed for political reasons when he was a Frankish convict. The abbot was buried on the island, but was brought back to their monastery ten years later by the monks from St. Gallen and buried a second time. In the 10th century, a chapel was built on the former grave of St. Otmar, which became a place of pilgrimage.

There is always a certain calm on the island. There are a few benches on the bank where you can sit down, almost right next to the swans.

A highlight at Lake Constance! An oasis of calm, with a small chapel and an idyllic garden. The monastery still houses five Franciscan monks.
