In the corner of the Grote Markt you can find the 'Free Fatherland Experience Center' in the City and Country House. Unlike other museums, this museum does not focus on the battlefields, but on the last small piece of free Belgium that remained, the so-called 'Belgian Sector'. From here Albert I, the then King of the Belgians, managed to hold out against the German occupier.
Vrij Vaderland tells the story behind the front, daily life in this last piece of unoccupied territory. Discover how Veurne and its surroundings suddenly had to deal with a melting pot of people; soldiers - both from their own country and from abroad -, doctors, nurses, but also refugees ended up here.
WWI museum: Experience center 'Free Fatherland, life behind the front'
The experience center presents this story in an atmospheric scenography using both modern media and traditional exhibition techniques.
Definitely worth a visit and a dive into the past.

Cosy and historical marketplace, good for a cafe stop.

Nice view of the church, and the market place.
Be careful with road bikes, as the whole place and surrounding area have a cobblestone surface, which isn't that enjoyable to drive on.
