According to legend, the Teufelsteine got their name after the devil met a local cobbler in Heiden. The devil, who was on his way to Aachen to destroy the cathedral there, carried a large sack with the stones lying here today on his back. The person opposite was carrying twelve pairs of tattered shoes. He asked him how far it was to Aachen. The shoemaker's boy saw the stones, recognized the devil on his horse's foot and suspected evil intentions. That's why he showed the devil his shoes and explained that he himself had just come from Aachen and had torn through all his shoes on the way to Heiden because it was so far away. The devil was then so discouraged that he threw the stones on the ground and pulled away.
