    Visbek groom

    Info from the net

In the extensive forests of the Wildeshauser Geest, halfway between Visbek and Ahlhorn, near the A1, is one of the most famous megalithic tombs in Northern Germany. At 104 x 9 m, the enclosure, a rectangular barren bed, is the longest in Lower Saxony. The actual burial chamber, which is located in the western part of the enclosure, looks tiny in relation to it. A total of about 130 stones in the stone rows have been preserved to this day; originally it will have been around 170 that were needed for the construction of the tomb.

In the immediate vicinity of this monumental arrangement, four more megalithic systems from the Neolithic Age have been preserved. The so-called bridal carriage (grave V), a few meters southeast of the groom, is the most handsome with its completely preserved chamber of four yokes. One looks in vain for an enclosure here.

A several kilometer long path leads from the Visbek groom through the forest, the so-called bride path, to the Visbek bride. Both are connected not only by the name and the path through the forest, but also by a legend: see Visbeker bride (station 28a).

It is best to drive through all the stone collections / stone graves in the region. That makes a great tour.
