On this section of the route there are still numerous boundary stones that mark the former border between the Electorate of Mainz (Upper Archbishopric Aschaffenburg) - marked "C M" - and the Hochstift / Fürabbey of Fulda - marked "F F".
According to the engraved date, the stone was erected in 1775, only a few decades before the aforementioned territories disappeared due to the upheavals of the Napoleonic era, the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803, the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. The Aschaffenburg part of Kurmainz fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria. Fulda largely to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel. If it had stayed that way, the Hessian-Bavarian border would run here today. As a result of the Austro-Prussian War, however, not only Hesse-Kassel became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866. The Orb office also changed from Bavaria to Prussia and so you are here today "in the middle" of the state of Hesse.
