There is an important war cemetery in the main cemetery in Dortmund, which serves as the final resting place for a total of 9,036 war dead. This memorial complex includes the graves of 3,249 German soldiers from both world wars as well as 89 victims of political persecution. In addition, the so-called Foreigners' Cemetery contains the graves of 5,698 war dead, including forced laborers, prisoners of war and foreigners who fought in Wehrmacht units. Among these are in particular 5,095 soldiers from the former Soviet Union, which underlines the international dimension of the victims buried in this cemetery. The war cemeteries at Dortmund's main cemetery are not only places of mourning, but also of remembrance and learning. They remind us of the horrors of war and the need to maintain peace and understanding. The cemetery itself, one of the largest in Germany, is in this respect an important historical and cultural place, offering visitors the opportunity to reflect on and learn from the past.
