Plankenfels Castle stands on a dolomite rock above the left side of the valley of the Upper Wiesent on the western edge of the town of Plankenfels in the Bayreuth district, Upper Franconia administrative district.
Two main buildings of the castle (west and east wings) are connected by an intermediate building with a gable roof. The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.
