The Ketterburg was built around the middle of the 13th century and probably destroyed again during the 15th century. Details are not sufficiently known. For a long time it was assumed that the Teutonic Order built the castle. There are recent references to the Lords of Hohenlohe as possible builders. The weir system is identical to Mergentheim Castle, which the Hohenlohe family sold to the German rulers in 1343.From 1730 the castle was demolished. The "walls at the old castle in the Köterwald" were used for the new construction of the castle church and later also after two major fires in 1787 and 1791 for the reconstruction of spoon stilts. A remnant of the northeastern moat is most clearly preserved above ground.
