In 1919, in view of the difficult economic situation after the First World War, several companies from the Krefeld silk industry, "Gebrüder Esters", "C. Lange" and "Kniffler-Siegfried" came together to form a community of interests, from which the United Silk Weaving Company, VerSeidAG for short, emerged in 1920. Before that, the production of silk was Krefeld's most important economic factor, especially in the 19th century, also known as the "Velvet and Silk City". The industrialists Hermann Lange and Josef Esters, both owners of a previously family-run weaving mill, took over management of VerSeidAG.
Mies van der Rohe was already a star when he first designed the avant-garde residential buildings and then the factory premises for the directors of VerseidAG in Krefeld. In 1931, the Bauhaus director built the HE building and other objects on the Girmesgath site. Finally, in 1999, the trend-setting architecture of the HE building and the old dyeing works were listed as historical monuments.
