The Geology of the Schildberg
In connection with the formation of the Alps and the collapse of the Upper Rhine Graben, the Mainz Basin was formed in what is now Rheinhessen. Seawater repeatedly flowed into this geological structure in two phases. Sea and land phases left their deposits. They built the Rhenish-Hessian plateau and with it the Schildberg. The deposits of the Schildberg (Stadecken Formation to Sulzheim Formation) are classified by geologists in the Selztal Group (Tertiary) and thus in an age of 30 to 25 million years.
