According to written sources, the castle was destroyed in 1439 when the citizens of Varde revolted.
In 1935 a series of excavations was carried out to determine whether the castle was really on the castle hill. The foundation for a half-timbered house with a length of 16.9 meters and a width of 6.9 meters has been found. The building had probably consisted of several floors.
