In the Middle Ages there was a castle on the hill. The damp meadows provided good protection against enemies and the traffic in the area was easy to monitor from the hill.

According to written sources, the castle was destroyed in 1439 when the citizens of Varde revolted.

In 1935 a series of excavations was carried out to determine whether the castle was really on the castle hill. The foundation for a half-timbered house with a length of 16.9 meters and a width of 6.9 meters has been found. The building had probably consisted of several floors.

It is not known who built the castle. Possibly they were Holstein counts. In any case, the city was under Holstein rule at least twice in the 14th century.
