Pingen are abandoned ore mines or mining sites in which iron ores, lead ores or other minerals were extracted from the earth. In the Kall municipal area you can find around 2,000 of these pings, which have been placed under protection by the Rhenish Office for Archaeological Monument Preservation in Bonn. The inexperienced hiker will think of these Pingen as a bomb crater field, because that's how they initially appear: large numbers of funnel-like depressions, close together, surrounded by ring-shaped heaps and partly overgrown by low bushes or interspersed with tall trees.
