Remains of a much larger burial mound field from the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age.
February 26, 2025
The Bonstorf burial mounds date back to the Early Bronze Age (c. 1500–1200 BC). Of at least 18 original burial mounds, six are still preserved today; one was excavated and reconstructed in 1973. It contained a wooden burial chamber and a stone crown. A man lay within it with grave goods such as a sword, a bronze knife, a heel axe, and a clay vessel. North of this burial mound, a woman was found wearing jewelry, including two bracelets, a headdress made of bronze tubes, and a bronze wheel pin on her chest. The finds provide valuable insights into burial customs and social structures of the Early Bronze Age.A bike tour to the burial mounds in the Southern Heath ideally combines nature, history, and exercise. The route leads through the diverse heath landscape, past quiet forests and open spaces that were inhabited thousands of years ago.
