Klanjec, a small town of great and noble people, rich in history and tradition, is located at the foot of Cesarska gora by the river Sutla, on the border with Slovenia. The town of Klanjec is first mentioned in written documents in the middle of the 15th century, although it is believed to be much older because it is believed to have been built to defend the burg of Cesargrad, whose written traces date back to the 14th century. The name of the town was created based on its geographical position - at the entrance to the Zelenjak gorge. It is a town of numerous contents and details, beautiful nature and architecture. Throughout history, Klanjec had the status of a market town in the 16th century, and in the 19th century it became the seat of the sub-county and district. The greatest contribution to today's picturesqueness and orderliness of the city was given by the noble Erdödy family, who ruled this area for four centuries! Novi Dvori Cesargradski Castle, although partially demolished today, is one of the most important castles in Hrvatsko Zagorje. The Franciscan monastery with the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 17th century on the picturesque Antun Mihanović Square, in the crypts of which two restored sarcophagi of the Erdödy family can be seen today, is a heritage of great importance. The town of Klanjec is the birthplace of famous artists and scientists. Among them are Dr. Ivan Broz and Franjo Iveković, authors of the first Croatian dictionary, then Oton Iveković, a great painter of Croatian history, the famous sculptor Antun Augustinčić, whose masterpiece sculpture "Peace" adorns the lobby of the UN building in New York. The author of the Croatian anthem Antun Mihanović also spent a significant time of his life in this town. Numerous associations bear his name in his honor. Not far from the town square are located next to the City Library and Reading Room and the Cultural Center modern buildings dedicated to art - Antun Augustinčić Gallery surrounded by a beautiful park with sculptures and Antun Augustinčić Gallery Studio.
