It was initially planned for use by the British Royal Air Force (RAF Nörvenich) as another so-called "clutch station" alongside RAF Geilenkirchen, RAF Wildenrath, RAF Brüggen, and RAF Laarbruch.
This term was used in the 1950s to describe newly built RAF bases located near the border with the Netherlands and thus as far away as possible from the then inner-German border.
