Distant signals are used to give advance notice of the position of the corresponding main signal. The advance signal is located in the braking distance of the respective route in front of the location of the main signal, so that the locomotive driver can react in good time and initiate the necessary braking in good time if the main signal is expected to be at a stop or slow down. The black and white bordered, yellow disk of the semaphore advance signal at the top of the mast sits on a support structure that rotates with the disk around a specific axis, thus enabling the disk to be folded over. At this point stood the advance signal, which announced the expected position of the entry signal of Schwarzerden station to the trains coming from the direction ofTurkishmühle. The advance signal was at a braking distance (400 m) from the associated main signal. If the advance signal showed "Expect stop", the engine driver had to expect that the entry signal was on "Stop". He then had to slow down the train within the braking distance so that he could stop in time before the main signal showing "stop". Source: text information board
