The name seems to derive from the surname of a family that lived in the area (Cà Negri) and on some maps dated 1800 it appears as "Ponte del Negro".
The bridge, with its characteristic humpback shape, represented an important communication route between the Lower Brembana Valley (Almenno = "Lemine") and Zogno) crossing the gorge of the Brembilla river.
