Best Hikes to Carillon at Zum Schiefen Eck, Rheinfelden

Tips

  • Carillon in the Rumpel, Rheinfelden
The most popular attraction in Rheinfelden, especially for families with children. The carillon in the Rumpel with the goat is a reminder of the cunning tailor who saved Rheinfelden from the Swedes.
    A goat as a mascot.
The goat - or Geiss in Swiss German - is something like the mascot of Rheinfelden. For example, a whole alley is dedicated to the goats, and their stone or plastic images can be seen in many places in the old town. The live goats at the Storchennestturm are particularly popular with families with children. There is even a special city tour dedicated to the cute animal, especially for young guests. The beautiful house "zum Schiefen Eck" shows why the goat is such an important animal for the city of Rheinfelden.
    Carillon.
The carillon sits on the north side of the "zum Schiefen Eck" building. It is reminiscent of the legend of the tailor who saved Rheinfelden from the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. He sewed himself into the hide of the last slaughtered billy goat and walked around the city wall, bleating. The sight of the supposedly well-fattened animal was the last straw for the already siege-weary Swedes, and they spared the city.
Four times a day the goat runs over the "city wall" with musical accompaniment from the carillon.Text / Source: Tourism Rheinfelden, City Office, Rheinfeldentourismus-rheinfelden.ch/de/erleben/sehenswuerdigkeiten/glockenspiel-rumpel

  • The carillon is a reminder of the stratagem of a tailor who saved the city from a Swedish siege during the Thirty Years' War: according to tradition, he had himself sewn into the hide of the last goat to be slaughtered and walked bleating along the city wall. The besiegers assumed that the city was still well supplied and gave up the supposedly unsuccessful siege...
The carillon sounds four times a day, and a goat also marches past under the figure of the tailor😊
