The Munot over Schaffhausen is the landmark of the city and a fine example of an early fortification. It was created as a circular fortress around 1580 to plans by Albrecht Dürer. In his story, he only had to endure a siege once, in 1799,

The fortress Munot was built from 1536 to 1546 according to an idea of Albrecht Dürer as Rondellbefestigung.
It is very well preserved, which may have been because it only once served as a defense, 1799 while the French retreated before the Austrians.
Today the Munot is an administrative and cultural building. It is surrounded by a vineyard, which belongs to the city of Schaffhausen and every year delivers a few thousand liters of wine. There is also a small herd of fallow deer. The deer is named after the current mayor of Schaffhausen.
