The Notte Canal is actually a river, but it was expanded under Elector Joachim II around 1569 to make the river navigable. It was the first waterway in Brandenburg to be made navigable. Between 1856 and 1864 it was extended to a length of 25 km between Mellensee and Königs Wusterhausen. The Notte, as a tributary of the Dahme, was then referred to as the canalized Notte. This later became the Notte Canal, although that is actually wrong because it is not an artificial waterway.
