Kingussie is a lively town and a good base for exploring the sensational Northern Cairngorms. Nestled in the Spey Valley, the town enjoys gorgeous scenery but is a little bit quieter than nearby Aviemore.

Nevertheless, there are many excellent hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs and self-catering facilities, as well as a great choice of places to eat and drink.

A popular local hike is to Ruthven Barracks. They were built on the site of an old castle mound in 1719 after the Jacobite uprising of 1715. The ruins are a splendid sight and boast tremendous views.
