The museum was opened on May 4, 1991, on the 100th anniversary of Sherlock Holmes' death, under the patronage and in the presence of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and Dame Jean Conan Doyle, daughter of the author of the Sherlock Holmes detective stories, in the English church of Meiringen. The museum was designed by the English architect couple John and Sylvia Reid. The museum features carefully assembled authentic exhibits relating to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, and the Victorian era. A unique feature, however, is the meticulously reconstructed living room of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson at 221B Baker Street, London. It has been carefully and authentically reconstructed based on clues found in the stories.

Meiringen is the main town in the Haslital and surrounded by a great mountain backdrop. Starting point for the big passes (Grimsel and Susten) or in the beautiful skiing and hiking area Hasliberg.
